REMONDIS gives new life to old clothing

REMONDIS has been involved in the collection of discarded clothing items for the last 20 years. These textile materials are collected at several of REMONDIS’ plant locations all across Germany. The local collection of clothing is generally organised in correlation to municipal contracts for the collection of conventional recyclables. The provision of collection services for textile materials has proven to be fruitful for many of our regional and local branches across Germany. REMONDIS has been able to gain considerable experience in the area of textile recycling over the past years. The market for refuse textiles has many of the characteristics prevalent in other markets for raw materials.

A new, promising area of business

The quantities of clothing items collected in Germany have recently reached a new threshold. The growing volume of refuse textiles has prompted REMONDIS to take the next step in this area of business. Our company now operates its own sorting infrastructure and trading platform. In 2017, REMONDIS acquired 90% of the shares in the company RE TEXTIL Deutschland GmbH (RTD). RTD is specialised in the area of textile recycling, and has many years of experience in the sector. The company has only recently completed the construction of a state of the art facility for the recycling of textiles. Going forward, REMONDIS aims to further improve RTD’s business model and to expand the company’s technological capacities.

Applying the REMONDIS standards – regardless of industry

The textile recycling industry is still in its infancy and thus faces significant challenges. REMONDIS is at the forefront when it comes to pushing for higher standards in the areas of quality management, safety standards, and strict appliance of public and administrative rules. In the meantime, the demand for RTD’s products has risen steeply. The company is receiving a high volume of orders. Furthermore, the interest for our activities in the area of textile recycling is great: clients and partners from all around the world come to visit our plant, which is located near Koblenz, in the western part of Germany. Textile recycling is a passionating and challenging new area of business. REMONDIS has taken on this challenge and is contributing to the development of this new industry.
